Situated in the heart of the Eden Valley, Lowther Castle and Gardens offers a combination of history, intrigue, and natural beauty. From a distance this once-grand 19th-century castle looks every bit as impressive as the day it was built. It is only as you approach Lowther that you realise its dramatic façade has been reduced to an empty shell.
Lowther Castle was once the magnificent home of the Earls of Lonsdale. It is said there was a room for every day of the year in this once great house. However, its fortunes declined precipitously in the 20th century, leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful skeleton.
Today, the castle tells its story through interactive exhibitions, immersive displays, and captivating artifacts that bring its vibrant past to life. Step into the “Story of Lowther” exhibition to uncover tales of extravagant parties, royal visits, and the castle’s unexpected transformation into a ruin.
A classic tale of a squandered inheritance, Lowther Castle’s story is sad but familiar. Known as “The Yellow Earl”, Hugh Cecil had a taste for the finer things in life. In fact he was reputed to have his own private orchestra which even had its own train carriage when the entourage travelled!
When the money finally ran out in the 1930s the estates downfall was swift. During World War II the army used the house and after this its then owner, the 7th Earl of Lonsdale, decided to leave the house to its fate. To add insult, much of the gardens were given over to growing commercial lumber and chickens and pigs were raised where there were once fine lawns.
The 130 acres of grounds and gardens at Lowther have their own remarkable story. Once lost to time, they have been lovingly restored, blending historical layouts with modern creativity. Take a wander through enchanting woodland walks, marvel at the dramatic parterre, or find solace in the tranquil Rose Garden. Children and the young at heart will adore the hidden trails, tree swings, and the grand “Lost Castle” adventure playground, one of the largest in the country.
Lowther Castle provides visitors with year-round charm. The bloom of summer, when the gardens burst with color, or in autumn, as golden leaves carpet the grounds. In winter, frosty mornings transform the ruins and gardens into a magical wonderland, while spring brings fresh life to the estate with blossoming flowers and vibrant greenery.
