Set above the southern shores of Ullswater, not far from Glenridding, is the charming little village of Patterdale. Surrounded by dramatic fells, deep valleys, and crystal-clear waters, the village’s picturesque setting and proximity to some of the region’s most iconic attractions make Patterdale a popular choice for walkers and day trippers.
Patterdale’s history is deeply rooted in the farming and mining traditions that shaped the Lake District. The name is derived from “St Patrick’s Dale,” a nod to the ancient chapel that once stood in honour of the celtic St Patrick, who is said to have visited the area. The village’s stone cottages and the 19th-century Saint Patrick’s Church evoke a timeless charm, offering visitors a glimpse into its rural past. The church itself, designed by Anthony Salvin, is a notable landmark. It features stunning stained-glass windows along with some fine tapestries.
Despite its diminutive size the village is home to the Patterdale Hotel, a historic inn that has been a haven for weary travelers for centuries, and the Patterdale Hall Estate, an ideal starting point for many outdoor adventures. For those looking for a bite to eat or a refreshing pint, The White Lion Inn is a traditional pub that serves hearty meals and local ales, perfect after a day of exploration.

Just a short walk from Patterdale is Ullswater, one of the Lake District’s most picturesque lakes. Hop aboard an Ullswater Steamer for a leisurely cruise that connects Patterdale to nearby Glenridding, Howtown, and Pooley Bridge. These boat trips offer stunning views of the surrounding fells and are a perfect way to explore the area.
One of the streams which feed into Ullswater is home to Aira Force, a spectacular 65-foot waterfall surrounded by lush woodland. It’s an easily accessible attraction with well-maintained walking trails, making it a perfect destination for families.

A few miles south of the village is Brothers Water, a tranquil lake surrounded by rolling hills and woodland. It’s an ideal spot for a gentle walk or a quiet picnic, away from the busier tourist spots.
Patterdale is a favorite base for climbers and hikers aiming for the summit of Helvellyn, England’s third-highest peak. The challenging ascent via Striding Edge, a narrow and dramatic ridge, is one of the most iconic hikes in the Lake District. For less experienced walkers, alternative routes to Helvellyn can be taken from Glenridding.

Patterdale is a key stop on Alfred Wainwright’s famed Coast to Coast Walk. Here, walkers can enjoy a section of this legendary trail, taking in panoramic views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells.
